WordPress developer role at GoDesign in Islamabad

What does a WordPress plugin developer do?

A WordPress plugin developer writes PHP code that adds features to WordPress without changing WordPress itself. Plugins hook into the core through actions and filters, so a booking form, a custom product type or a link to a CRM can be added, updated and removed independently of the theme. The same developer usually builds themes and block templates as well, which is why most job titles simply say "WordPress developer".

Some plugin developers publish free or paid plugins for thousands of sites. Most, including ours, write plugins for one client: the custom feature that an off-the-shelf plugin almost covers but not quite.

What WordPress developers work on at GoDesign

WordPress and WooCommerce are the platforms we use most for client websites and stores, alongside Shopify, Laravel and Next.js on other projects. GoDesign has completed 900+ projects for clients in 50+ countries since 2018, so a developer here moves between quite different builds. Published examples include WooCommerce templates and German Market integration for a coffee roastery, a WordPress food and recipe blog, and a WooCommerce pet store.

What this article covers.

Responsibilities in the role

  • Build WordPress sites accurately from Figma designs, mobile first, with Core Web Vitals in mind from the start.
  • Write custom plugins and theme functions in PHP: custom post types, block templates, WooCommerce hooks and REST API endpoints.
  • Extend existing plugins through their hooks rather than editing their files, so client sites stay updatable.
  • Find out why a slow site is slow and fix the cause, whether that is database queries, caching, images or a heavy page builder.
  • Handle staging, migrations, backups and deployments through the host's tools and Git.
  • Write down what you built so the project manager and the client can run the site after handover.

A project manager is the client's point of contact, so you spend your time building rather than chasing feedback. You will still join some client calls to explain technical choices, mostly in written English.

Skills and experience we look for

  • Modern PHP and WordPress internals: hooks, the block editor, WP-CLI, nonces, sanitising and escaping data.
  • WooCommerce: product types, the checkout, payment gateways, order emails and the hooks around them.
  • HTML, CSS and JavaScript well enough to build a layout without a page builder when the design needs it.
  • Git and a staging workflow, and experience with at least one managed host or cPanel hosting.
  • Useful extras: React, Shopify Liquid, Laravel, or integrations with Zoho, HubSpot and n8n.

We look at what you have built more than at certificates. A GitHub profile, a plugin you wrote, or two live sites you can walk us through say more than a CV line. For a full role, around two years of delivering WordPress sites for real clients is a sensible starting point; junior roles say so in the listing.

The stack and tools you will use

WordPress 7.0, released on 20 May 2026, added an AI client API to core, so plugins can call external AI models through one shared interface instead of each shipping its own connector. Client projects increasingly ask for AI features, so knowing that API, alongside the classic hooks, is now part of the job.

How to apply for WordPress developer jobs at GoDesign

  1. 01Check current openings on our careers site at lifeatgodesign.com.
  2. 02Open the role on app.godesign.pk/jobs. Each listing states the requirements, whether it is office-based or hybrid, and the steps for that role.
  3. 03Apply through the form on the listing, with links to code or live sites you built. CVs sent by email or through the website contact form are not tracked.
  4. 04Expect a technical conversation about work you have done: how you structured a plugin, what broke, how you fixed it.

Salary is discussed during hiring rather than published here. If no developer role is listed today, there is no opening at the moment; the jobs page is updated when one opens, and we do not run a waiting list.

Junior developers and internships

When we hire juniors or interns, the role appears on the same jobs page. Juniors are paired with a senior developer on real client work from the first week, and nobody is handed a live build and left alone with it. If you are a fresh graduate, the useful preparation is building things: a small plugin, a WooCommerce store for a friend's business, a theme from a Figma file you found. Government programmes such as DigiSkills and e-Rozgar teach WordPress basics and are a reasonable start.

Becoming a WordPress plugin developer: where to start

  1. 01Learn PHP properly first: functions, arrays, classes and namespaces. WordPress code is PHP before it is anything else.
  2. 02Read the official Plugin Handbook on developer.wordpress.org. It covers hooks, security, settings pages and the REST API.
  3. 03Build a small plugin that solves a real problem, such as a custom post type with its own fields and a block to display it.
  4. 04Run it through the Plugin Check tool and PHP_CodeSniffer with the WordPress Coding Standards, and fix what they flag.
  5. 05Publish it on GitHub, or submit it to the WordPress.org plugin directory, which requires GPL-compatible licensing and a review.

A published plugin, even a small one, is the strongest thing you can put on an application, because it shows you can finish and maintain code that strangers rely on.

Finding WordPress developer jobs in Pakistan

WordPress work is one of the most common entry points into software jobs in Pakistan. Software houses and agencies in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi hire WordPress developers steadily, and many advertise on LinkedIn Jobs and Rozee.pk as well as their own careers pages. Remote roles with foreign companies exist too, usually as contracts paid in dollars to a bank account or Payoneer, without the leave and provident fund of a salaried job.

Freelancing is the other route. Many WordPress developers start on Upwork or Fiverr, and the client handling it teaches is valuable in an agency. Our comparison of freelancing and a permanent job sets out the trade-offs, and our guide to avoiding freelancing scams is worth reading before you accept a remote offer: a real employer never asks you to pay a fee or share bank logins.

Common questions

Is the WordPress developer role at GoDesign remote?
Roles are based at our office in DHA Phase 2, Islamabad, with hybrid working on the roles that say so. We only describe a role as remote when it is, and each listing on app.godesign.pk/jobs states the arrangement before you apply.
Do you hire junior WordPress developers?
Sometimes, and junior listings say so explicitly. Juniors are paired with a senior developer on real client work from the first week rather than left alone with a live build.
What is the difference between a WordPress developer and a plugin developer?
A plugin developer writes code that adds features through WordPress hooks, while a WordPress developer usually builds themes and whole sites as well. In agency work the two overlap, and most roles expect both.
Do I need to know WooCommerce?
For most roles here, yes, because a large share of client work is online stores. You should know how products, the checkout and payment gateways work and how to change them through hooks.
How do I become a WordPress plugin developer?
Learn PHP, read the official Plugin Handbook, and build a small plugin that solves a real problem. Check it with the Plugin Check tool and the WordPress Coding Standards, then publish it on GitHub or the WordPress.org directory.
Where do I apply?
Find the role on lifeatgodesign.com or app.godesign.pk/jobs and apply through the form on the listing. Applications sent by email or through the website contact form are not tracked.
