Do you have the fear that you might fail while starting your business? Relax! Overcoming fear is a necessity and everyone deals with it when starting a business. Because it is quite natural when the question of starting your business, growing it, and then taking it to some next level comes, it involves a great deal of fear. This is one of the most important plus underrated skills that every entrepreneur has to master.
Every entrepreneur faces this fear in his life. But, in order to be successful, you have to deal with each and every kind of fear. Most of the time, it is easy to say that you can overcome your fears and when the time of action comes, the very same task seems difficult. If you are not starting a business, apart from lack of money or time, fear might be the reason that is stopping you.
As already mentioned, sometimes fear stops you from starting a new business. To overcome this, you have to do a few things like having serious conservations about expanding your business or making any other big decisions. Fear causes you to self-sabotage your good intentions and prevents you from doing the things that you want to do. Remember that, every successful entrepreneur had to face and overcome their own fears. Most of them are still trying to do this each day. They do have fears but they have learned how to tackle them.
Here are 7 ways to overcome your fears and take your business to the next level. Plus you can apply these to any stage you are at in your business.
1. Understanding the Fear
When you are procrastinating certain tasks, there are two possibilities of doing so. Either you do not know how to handle it or you are afraid that you won’t be able to do this. If you come to know the fact that you are afraid of something, then it is easy for you to tackle that and you will be able to understand your fear in detail.
Now ask yourself the question, “What exactly are you afraid of?” It might be the fear of looking like a fool in front of peers, or appearing too arrogant or hurting someone. There are a number of reasons that can cause fear. When you brainstorm about this, you will see that in actual your fear makes no sense at all. Considering your fear as non-sense can help you overcome it but there are exceptions. Sometimes, our illogical fears do not dissipate. If they persist, then move on to the next step!
2. Work out your Worst-Case Scenario
Keep your fear in mind, and then imagine that your worst nightmare comes true. What would that look like? What is its impact on you? Try your best to imagine what would you do or feel if something really happens. You should remember that for some people, the worst-case scenario turns out successful. People are afraid that if they succeed, there will be some other undesirable ramifications. i.e. they will be either too busy, or start thinking differently, or have too many obligations.
In most cases, the worst-case scenario is not that bad. But in any other case, you can think of something that would minimize the damage if that situation eventuates.
3. Bask into your Best-Case Scenario
Make a promise to yourself! If you had done the previous step then you will definitely go through this step too.
Now, imagine that each and everything goes perfect and right. Think about it, what should be the best thing that would happen to you if you take this action? How would you feel after overcoming your fear? How would it help you in the future? What has its impact on you and your future?
After imaging these scenarios, are you able to found that your best case scenario is interesting and your worst-case scenario is not actually that bad?
4. Expect the middle ground
You should hope for the best that your best case scenario comes true. But in real life, in the light of facts and figures, you should know that your outcomes will not meet the best level but rather somewhere in the middle. Now you might be thinking what actually is grounding? It is the common fact that your outcomes might not be near the glorious zenith that you had hoped for, but also not close to your worst nightmares. This is grounding. And you should expect the middle ground.
5. Find a way to address your fear
If you are facing the fear that seems constant, and you try your best to overcome it but it comes again in your way and blocks you, then you must find a strategy that will help you to eliminate the fear from your life permanently.
While going for a strategy, you should not need to go to extremes because it seems a little bit radical. For example, if your fear is based on the lack of knowledge, then you can overcome it by reading the top 5 books of that very topic or subject. It will help you to gain at least 90% knowledge about that. If your fear is more skill-based, then you should try to work on your skill specifically. You can also watch videos on Youtube about improving that very skill. So simply, try to find the possible and easy way to address your fear and then overcome it.
6. Decide which risk you would rather take
One of the most important steps that you can take in overcoming fear in business is to believe that there are some risks with doing a particular task, but there are also risks if you do not take the action. For most people, the biggest fear is that what other people will think about them.
You should start thinking logically and ask yourself what type of person you want to be in front of others, someone who is foolish and takes careless action or would I want to be the person who has a lot of ideas but never took any action? Decide what would you do? I would prefer the former one because in that at least you are trying to do something even in a careless manner! It is better to take a nonserious action than doing nothing.
7. Commit to taking the next step
Even if you are failing to overcome your fear, this is the foolproof strategy that will surely help you to tackle it. The strategy is to figure out the next small step that you can do towards your goal and make that happen.
Acknowledge your fear. But do not let it come in your way to success. By moving on to the next step means that you should not focus only on the big projects but do everything that will move you closer to your goal. Send that email, call that contact, press publish, ask someone for advice, or do whatever you want to do.
Overcoming Fear in Business Never Ends!
Remember that fear is the only thing that tells you that you are outside your comfort zones. This might tell you that you are trying to do some extraordinary things by taking risks. Plus you have heard it too, that magic always happens when you come out of your comfort zones. The main point is that with each action that you take in the face of fear, your confidence grows and your fear diminishes. It will help you to prepare for some new scary challenge that you are going to your face in your business.
Be positive, even if it is tough. Believe in yourself and your business. Go after what you want and do not let the fear stand in your way. As George Addair says:
“Everything you want is on the other side of the fear”
